Joseph Goebbels, presenting a Stradivarius violin to Nejiko Suwa in 1943
JOSEPH GOEBBELS gave a simple but philosophical speech about the importance of music. Then, smiling, he handed over the violin to the young woman.
The setting was Berlin; the gift an 18th-century instrument. The ceremony, a chance to cement an alliance and to thank the violinist for playing for the German wounded.
A Japanese friend of mine tells me that Suwa died last year aged 92 the violin was always her most cherished possession and she loved it very much. ♡
